Hi, I'm Andy. I'm currently looking for work in the Birmingham (UK) area following the completion of my undergraduate degree in Computer Science (BSc) from the University of Birmingham.

I completed university in July 2008 with a 1st class degree. My dissertation focused of the data transmission processes involved between two computers communicating via the TCP/IP protocol at all layers of the stack. These processes are presented in a user-configurable, interactive graphical simulation. The culmination of this work was a 40,000 word report and a 15,000 line Java application. If you haven't guessed, my Java is much better than it was a few years ago ;)

At University I specialised in Java, Software Engineering, Real Time System Programming, Operating Systems, Virtual Reality, Computer Networks and Distributed Systems. In addition to these modules I studied a wide variety of subjects including but not exclusively: C/C++, Databases, Human Computer Interaction, Compilers & Languages, Commercial Programming, Artificial Intelligence, Models of Computation, Databases, Hardware Engineering, Economics, Communication Skills and Professional Issues.

In addition to my academic qualifications, I have significant experience in the parts selection, construction and maintenance (hardware & software) of desktop computers and servers through a long-lasted personal interest in the field and my work for the company Specialist Computer Centres (SCC). I worked at SCC during my year out as a technical engineer at their Tyseley site in Birmingham

I am an avid computer overclocker and enjoy getting more than I paid for! I also completed 2 Semesters of the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) course in my free time at secondary school. I intend to complete this course once I am earning again.

If you're wondering why it took me so long to complete my degree- I had to re-sit my first year after I narrowly failed my core Java module. This turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to me as it forced me to raise my game. By the end of my second year, I scored in the top 5 for the advanced Java module.

Unfortunately towards the end of my time at University, I became seriously ill over a 4 month period straddling two academic years. (now fully recovered!) Due to the timing of this illness, I had to take a year-out which delayed the submission of my dissertation. It was during the the latter portion of my year out I worked for SCC.

Samples of my University and personal work are available on this website in the Work section.
